The director of CETRAD, Lívia Madureira, took part in an interview with Jornal de Notícias where she pointed out that, despite the initiatives of local authorities, the subsidies available are insufficient to reverse the depopulation of the interior. She emphasised the need for more robust and coordinated public policies, as well as investments in infrastructure and services, to attract and retain young people in these regions.
The centre’s director also warned of the importance of a transdisciplinary approach to the sustainable development of rural territories, integrating different areas of knowledge to promote effective solutions adapted to local specificities. CETRAD, under her leadership, has promoted workshops and events that encourage collaboration between academia, local authorities and the community, with the aim of strengthening the social and economic fabric of the interior.
Professor Lívia Madureira’s interview reinforces the urgency of integrated and strategic action to combat ageing and human desertification in the interior of the country.
