Description:

The knowledge of the viticultural aptitude and the definition of terroir through the agro-ecological zoning foreseen by the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) are necessary conditions to support the improvement of planning, management, dynamisation and sustainability of the territories and viticultural production units. Wine-growing territories lack instruments for action, decision and empowerment of agents to improve the economy and territorial governance, valorisation of cultural landscapes and wine products, integration in international networks, attraction of investors and tourists, dynamisation and promotion of economic initiative and social entrepreneurship. The rationalisation of policies, plans and strategic investments, production and transformation practices will translate into the improvement of the viability of units and activities as well as the environmental quality and quality of life of the local population.

This project focuses on the sub-regions of Monção and Melgaço and Lima, both in the Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes, and involves private entities of an associative nature in the interprofessional sector and entities from the scientific and technological system with proven experience in viticulture, oenology, as well as in processes and systems to dynamise rural activities and territories. The planned activities include:
(i) agro-ecological zoning and natural, cultural and economic suitability for viticulture for the definition and management of the terroir;
(ii) specification, development and sustainability of the territorial information system and collaborative platform WEBSIG;
(iii) validation of the viticultural zoning by ecophysiology, production, phytosanitary, social perception and economic results;
(iv) dissemination of the results and the zoning, training and organization of the agents.

At the end it is intended to obtain the following results:
i) spatial databases, a territorial information system, a WEBGIS platform for consultation and communication with resources and content accessible by geoportal, expert systems for strategic and political decision support, terroir proposals to the OIV, winegrowing aptitude and productive capacity cartography;
ii) in parallel, the involvement, participation, organisation and training of agents and the organisation of promotional events, particularly those of interest for internationalisation;
iii) impacts on the greater viability of the production units and sustainability of these wine-producing territories and on commercialisation.
