NEWFOOD is a project that brings together the ambitions of 4 Universities in the North Region to accelerate the processes of expansion and consolidation of the so-called “traditional products” through an innovation proposal catalysed by the transfer of knowledge and technology. Structured in 3 Actions aimed at:
(i) mapping the knowledge and skills existing in the Region and inventorying the needs of the sector to ensure the innovation process focused on the central axes of expansion and consolidation of the sector;
(ii) promoting innovation projects oriented to the generation of new products/solutions with economic relevance;
(iii) actively disseminating knowledge, skills and resources to the entities involved including the stakeholders of the relevant economic sectors.

This proposal responds to the clear identification of “traditional” products and the evolution and adaptation of these products to modern markets, as a priority for the development of the economy in the North Region, pursuing the regional smart specialisation plan (ris3) by crossing the knowledge, competences and resources between the scientific capabilities and the agricultural and agro-food resources held in the region, articulated through 4 Universities in the North Region.

There are very strong, productive and variously structured cooperation links between relevant actors in the agri-food sector and the Universities involved. These links include bilateral relationships between companies and researchers, formal protocols and associations formed specifically to advance the R&D agenda for the sector such as, for example, Portugal Foods and ADVID. This project aims to enhance these established links, with initiatives that are on the one hand integrative but also eminently practical and concrete.
