I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Agribusiness Management at the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences (SNES) at Newcastle University.
I studied Animal Science at Evora University (Portugal), have a MSc in Agro-Food Marketing from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (Spain) and a PhD in Resource Economics from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst (USA). My expertise is in food marketing and applied business economics.
My research program has two main lines of inquiry, first I examine how firms along the supply chain coordinate to deliver quality attributes of food. An example of this research is my early work on the economics of traceability and more recently investigation of free riding in collective labels. Secondly, I study how information cues such as labels or certification symbols influence consumers food purchase and waste choices from farm to fork. My second line of research investigates the role of information in supply chain coordination. I started my career investigating consumers valuation of origin in traditional cheeses and recently how using digital technologies to convey nutrition information impacts consumers choices. My work informs business marketing strategies as well as policy. I employ survey and experimental methods on my empirical research. Currently I am doing research on the value of information to affect farmers agri-environmental decisions, consumers attitudes to sustainable diets, food waste mitigation in food service and households and urban
